Aquarius and Impala Platinum Holdings of South Africa each has a 50 percent shareholding in Mimosa.
A MINE worker died on Monday at Mimosa Mining Company in Zvishavane, the company has announced.
Charles Teketai a Load, Haul and Dump machine (LHD) Operator was fatally crashed on the head while working underground at the mine. Aquarius and Impala Platinum Holdings of South Africa each has a 50 percent shareholding in Mimosa.
“Mimosa Mining Company announces with deep regret an underground fatality involving one of its Load, Haul and Dump machine (LHD) Operators, Mr Charles Teketai, on the 4th of January 2016,” said corporate affairs management, Elizabeth Nerwande in a statement.
“Mr Teketai (41) was tramming ore when his LHD machine encroached into a drill steel barricade, resulting in one of the drill steels striking his head. He died from the subsequent injuries. In line with the Company’s safety policies in attaining Zero Harm in all operations, Mimosa is conducting a full investigation to determine the cause of the accident,” Nerwande said.
Fatal accidents in Zimbabwe’s major mines are rare, with Mimosa itself sometimes recording long periods of safety.
In a statement Aquarious Platinum Limited chief executive officer Jean Nel said relevant regulatory authorities had been informed and a full investigation was underway.
In 2012, 85 Mimosa Mining Company workers were trapped underground at its operation, about 35 kilometres west of Zvishavane after a bearing caught fire.
They are rescued within a few hours.
The Mimosa operation produces about 100 000 ounces of platinum in concentrate annually and comprises about 30 percent of Aquarius’s output.
